Let me tell you how my story ends:
I become a tenured, award-winning professor of political science at an Ivy League university and then at one of the leading universities in the South.
Now let me tell you how my story begins:
I grow up in rural Virginia literally dirt poor. I drop out of school in the eighth grade and have three children by the time I'm 20.
I consider myself to be a reasonably modest person, but even I have to admit that's quite a journey.
How did I do it?
I worked hard. Not crazy, 24/7 hard. Just hard.
I made good decisions. Not brilliant, three-dimensional chess decisions. Just good ones.
I met people along the way who helped me and sincerely wanted to see me succeed, not because they had something to gain, but because they were decent people. Almost all of these individuals, by the way, were white.
But mostly, I think I was blessed in one crucial way.
I was born in America, a true land of opportunity for anyone of any color or background. In this country, where you start your life does not determine where you end up.
That works in both directions, by the way. You can start out with every advantage and waste them all. Or start out with nothing and become a success.
It all depends on you. Your attitude is far more important than your race, gender, or social class in determining what you will accomplish in life.
When I hear young blacks, or anyone for that matter, talk about systemic racism, I don't know whether to laugh or cry. I want to laugh because it's such nonsense. I want to cry because I know it's pushing untold numbers of young blacks into a dead end of self-pity and despair. Instead of seizing the amazing opportunities America offers them, they seize an excuse to explain why they're not succeeding.
I was born into a world where systemic racism was real - no fooling, outright bigotry, back-of-the-bus real. But here's what you need to know: yes, that racism shaped the black experience, but even then it did not define it.
Change was in the air.
Call it systemic reform.
The modern civil rights movement was in its infancy, and the leaders who fought for equal rights for blacks were men and women of all races.
They believed in America and were determined to see it live up to its highest ideals - ideals manifest in the Declaration of Independence, and the US Constitution.
Did I know growing up that George Washington and Thomas Jefferson owned slaves? I don't think I ever thought about it. If I did, I'd like to think that I would have had enough common sense to know that we can't judge men who lived 250 years ago by the moral standards of our own day.
But I know that Jefferson wrote the words in the Declaration of Independence that made slavery ultimately impossible; that all men are created equal. And, I know that Washington, Hamilton, Franklin, Adams, and the rest of the Founders risked everything to make my world, my America, possible.
How could I not be grateful for that and for the sacrifices so many others have made to preserve it?
The truth is, I cannot remember a time when I did not love America and feel pride in the belief that I live in the greatest country in the world.
I knew if I diligently pursued my ambitions, I could leave the poverty of my early years, with all its abuse and depression, behind me.
I was fortunate in another way. I was spared the life-sapping, negative messages about America that are crippling a generation of young people.
These ideas are poison:
White privilege.
Whiteness as a form of property.
Unconscious racism.
Police have it out for blacks.
That the United States was created to protect and promote slavery.
These are the ideas young people are told they must accept.

This dumb. I don't care about your attitude, it takes race, class and gender to move up in this world. If you come from a suppressed group, your life will be harder. And moving up will be harder. Attitude does outway your background, that's dumb. And don't give me that "Ooo this america of course you're gonna struggle" and "anyone can move up" it's still not fair, and that's unamerican. You seem to not understand how hard it is to progress, if you fall Into an oppressed group of people.
Ninnikins Өдрийн өмнө
This so dumb. Your attitude doesn't just determine your success. I can have the attitude that I want to be millionaire, but because I'm black I have to work 10 times as hard. And I may not make it. Most of don't. It doesn't matter about your attitude, you have to get lucky. Don't say "oh it can happen to anyone" because last I checked there were a lot more white people being "lucky" than black people. It's not a mentality either. If it were that there would be a lot more black people being successful, because mentality aren't impossible to break. Society being against you isn't impossible either, but it's significantly harder. In conclusion, this is dumb. You attitude doesn't just determine your success in life, if your goal is social wealth and status, it takes being born in the right race, or being the very few of your suppressed race that make it. It takes attitude and luck. So I ask you, how is that fair?

It's truly disheartening to hear those who push the concept of systemic racism is still alive currently are those who indoctrinate minorities, especially the black communities, that they're dealt with the worst hand solely on the basis that they were born black while ignoring that any other race who was actually dealt with the worst hand. By doing this, they're being more racist as they treat the lives of black people more like children who don't know any better rather than the equal beings they really are. Born a minority myself, I have not once have I ever experienced racial discrimination just because of the color of my skin. I truly find it immoral and disgusting that people my age who also never experienced racial discrimination and never will behave like they're victims of it. They do this because they were told they're victims and they were gullible enough to believe it. Worst of all, because I refused to conform to being a victim, I was immediately ridiculed and deemed a traitor to my race by radicals. These are the true racists that plague the US and our government.

They ridiculed you because, judging on your comment here, it sounds like you've adopted the head in the sand principle of "I keep hearing about racism, but it's never happened to me, so therefore, racism doesn't exist, you're all just complaining lolz." That's called being dismissive to other peoples' experiences.

Race is an atheist concoction. All mankind comes from two individuals. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitochondrial_Eve Race is a fiction. We are the human race. People kill and die because of the lie that there is no God. This is why atheism is humanities worst enemy. And then you combine that with the idea of man-made climate change as if those glaciers and ice caps melting are an indicator of man and not an indicator of an artificially vent that created those ice caps. These people are upside down and backward because they believe lies. We know that radiocarbon dating is not accurate. We know that dating by layers is not accurate either. So the LIE of millions of years disappears because it's a simple fiction.

This video was good until the point of the founding fathers. It's a known fact that Jefferson was a hard-core racist and the Washingtons did everything they could to keep their slaves. Shucks the wife literally went around the word to get one back that did her hair really well. We don't have to hold them to the same standards but to say they really believed all men were created equal is a lie that we had to fix 3 separate times to end slavery (13th), end Indian discrimination(Indian reformation act), end POC exclusion completely (1952 immigration act that allowed Asians free citizenship, and both civil rights acts in the 60s)

Being an old guy I have seen what was intended compared to the results. In the 60's they thought they could buy the Black Americans out of poverty and for about 60% of the community it worked, but for 40% it was a disaster. Children from the hood communities don't have a chance, I would like to see every Black American receive a check for 250,000, if you cash the check you have to leave the country for good. If they move to Africa they are the new 1%, they would actually find a new purpose in life because that is what we have taken from them, in America it would just be another lottery winner, most end up worse off after they win..

I commend Prof. Carol Swain for what she's been able to accomplish but one person's life story is INSUFFECENT in telling the story of the shared experience of an entire racial demographic. A racial demographic entirely fabricated by the United States (White, Black, Latino... you know, all of our ancestors originally came from different nations, tribes, cultures etc. Our government redefined our heritage on our superficial features in order to divide, exploit, and maintain a social hierarchy...but I digress) I 100% agree with Prof. Carol Swain that your attitude is by far the most determinative factor in achieving personal success...Without a doubt, personal determination and resiliency are the best qualities to have in order to survive and its some of the best advice to give. Never give up. BUT what's equally important to remember is another person's determination and/or ability to screw you whether it's intentional or not. What's equally important in life is one's beliefs. I am a man of faith and I am a man of evidence based logic, these two things are NOT mutually exclusive nor contradictory, the more I learn from facts, data, context and history, and the more confident I become in what I ultimately believe. As a white man, when I look at and experience the world around me I cannot help but notice how self -evident truths require a level of understanding of the bigger picture. When I am told by a government contractor hiring manager "thank God your not black, I didn't want to have to sit through the orientation video in order for you to take hiring quiz...none of the correct answers are in to video so I will give those to you now on the condition that you will say you watched the video if asked" I think to myself and I really F***ing hearing this? All but 1 person in my work crew was white. There was another all black crew I worked with for a bit, same job different contractor, less protective equipment, more dangerous duties, and they all earned 20% less than I did. The non English speaking crew were given zero protective gear, the most life threatening duties and earned $4 an hour. When I listened to my ex-girlfriends stories about her upbringings (she was Black) I couldn't help but notice how the long term impacts of family separation shaped her life experience. Her father Served 17 years in prison after being caught for breaking into a vehicle. A series of financial pitfalls drove her father to take consequential risks that at the time he felt was necessary in order for the family to survive. The family did survive, the parents remained true to their marriage, and though I was all too familiar with the struggling neighborhood where they lived, (I had also lived on that same block in college) the decision to reallocate a section of the underperforming high-school for the advanced placement college-pre school (due to budget cuts in education) provided my girlfriend the lucky opportunity to attend a credentialed school and graduate with a university scholarship. Had they lived 1 street over, 1 zip code away, the trajectory of her life might have been entirely different. When I looked back at my own college experience, I couldn't help but notice the demographic differences between the students on that campus compared to everyone else in my city. It was noticeably whiter, men were taller, women were more athletic, and more attention was paid to clothing brands. I almost felt as if these college students sprouted up from the ground out of nowhere. Stories of their upbringings seemed truly foreign to me. Cruises vacations, surfing, skiing, golfing, tales involving purchases, even their eating habits...8 dollar sandwiches they'd take 3 bites from and throw the rest away. The thing that stood out to me the most was the makeup of my college classmates within my major. 250 people would enroll at the beginning of year 1 and at years end the college would handpick 48 top performers to advance forward through years 2-5. Once accepted every admitted class worked and mingled with the upper and lower classes in the same building. I witnessed 7 different classes, 48 people within each come and go. Out of all these different students not once did I ever see a single African-American among my peers. I can go on and on. Keeping it real though, it's obvious there are systemic racial problems In the United States. We are a nation of laws, a nation of policies, and institutional history. The fact that our laws, policies, and institutions from our past were intentionally racist, intentionally discriminatory, intentionally cruel and genocidal CANNOT BE IGNORED. We try to paint over our history, but I am only 1 generation removed from Jim Crow, colored bathrooms, assassinations of civil rights leaders, and marriage between 1 man and 1 women of different races being Illegal! What the F***! Yes, of course the United States has made tons of progress...AND I THANK YOUR generation for that! SERIOUSLY. But to pretend racists do not exist throughout the nation holding various positions of authority and power in the public and private sector is lunacy. No one believes that! To pretend the new deal didn't largely ignore the economic plight of African Americans, or the first bombs ever dropped on US soil didn't target the economic center of black wealth, that banks, and courts didn't forcable

I agree with most of this, But I will say there's alot here that isn't being addressed. I imagine that most of the people who comment here are white and don't deal with alot of the problems black folk deal with today. It isn't an issue of blaming anyone or "trying to place blame" because there's a large population of white folk that feel the effects of poverty and the problems that come with that. I promise you this... the idea that if you work harder than others and "pull yourself up by the bootstraps" is false I know. I work 80 hour work weeks and I'm a white male in my 30's. There are exceptions to all rules. I would love to see her debate this with another black professor from the opposite view point. A lot of people are without the IQ to obtain such high degrees. I think her message is positive, but moving up from the “class” you were born into is very difficult for all races. Let’s have some compassion for those that don’t have such high intellect, born into poverty, and stuck in poverty. Let’s also have compassion for those that are filthy rich, and yet have nothing of worth besides material possessions. I’ve watched about 3 videos from this channel, I think they like to showcase “facts” without substantial references. My comment is my opinion, and that’s all she is stating here too.

Dr. Swain, thank you sharing your story with Prager U. Seeing how you participated and made and appearance on this MNpost channel, you are obviously conservative or fascist. Dr. Swain, I urge you to reconsider what Black Lives Matter is simply trying to state. Black Lives Matter are simply stating that Black Americans do contribute to American society. They are not saying that Black Americans are more important or superior than white Americans or other minorities. They are simply stating there is an extreme racial bias existing within today's law enforcement officers. Black Lives Matter is simply trying to state that there needs to be a De-Militarization of law enforcement and that their procedures, practices, and etc. simply need to be systemically reviewed and reformed. They are also stating that it is past time for The War on Drugs to END. For The Prison-Industrial Complex to become heavily minimized. This all that Black Lives Matter is simply trying to state.

Luke 22:36-38 Jesus Christ told his followers that if they didn't own a sword that they were to sell their coats and use the money to buy one. I want to remind all of you that these are the words of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ the only begotten son of our creator God who suffered and died on the cross for our sins and then rose again on the third day. You need to be totally aware that these are "his" words!! At that place in time there was no such thing as a gun. The most advanced personal protection was a sword. Why did Jesus tell them to buy a sword? Did he plan for them to fillet fish with it? Did he intend for them to slice loaves of bread with it? Did he intend for them to kill poisonous snakes with it? I don't have to tell you why he instructed them to carry a sword because you already know what he meant and why he said those words to them. These communist in the democrat party have already stolen the election, they've already silenced your voices on the main stream media and the internet and now they're coming to forcibly wrench your guns from your hands. If Jesus was here, right now, would he tell you to surrender your guns? If the founding fathers of our nation were here, right now, would they tell you to surrender your guns? The British Empire ordered the founding fathers to surrender their guns and their answer was simple......NO!! 75 years ago the citizens of Germany surrendered their guns to Hitler and look what it got them. Even Angela Merkel, the president of Germany and a gigantic leftist liberal stood up last week and criticized Jack Dorsey of Twitter for silencing the voices of American conservatives. She remembers what happened to the German people 75 years ago when they surrendered their guns and allowed their voices to be silenced by Adolph Hitler and his Nazis thugs. She and all of the people of Germany recognize a political coup when they see it and it terrifies them and it should also terrify every single one of you. Do not surrender your guns to these evil tyrants brothers and sisters! STAND YOUR GROUND AND TELL THEM.....NO!!!!

In America, nobody cares enough to oppress you. You're just not as important as you think you are.

You have no right to teach anyone about racism when you openly defend slavery.

Racism is more common than many think. Even since ancient times people have been hating and weary of other outside tribe and nations throughout all of history. Just accept it, it’s not going away

Black people didn't change racism in the 60's by ignoring it. Don't play yourself by thinking you can... Dr. MLK could've focused on self-motivation and became successful too

I agree with everything she says, except the whole founding fathers thing. I don’t get why people have such a hard time accepting that those guys were assholes. You can’t use the argument ‘don’t judge men by the moral standards of the past’ when those men wholeheartedly knew that what they were doing was wrong. There’s multiple journal entries where they question the practice of slavery and continue to participate. They even write ‘all men are created equal’. I’m sure they know that blacks are human so......

Dude there were abolitionist during the time of slavery and Benjamin Franklin was actually one himself. They intentionally made the constitution open ended for it to enhance human rights in the future. And do you think it would be easy to tell the whole cine s to get rid of slaves without a struggle for it? They literally fought a war and they aren’t gonna start another one just when they began running the country.
