It's Time to Grow Up

We all know that there’s more to maturity than simply growing older. So what characteristics do you need to become a mature person? And why will that help you lead a better life? UCLA Medical School psychiatrist Dr. Stephen Marmer explains.

We all know it takes a long time to grow up - not only biologically, but psychologically. There's a saying among psychiatrists that it takes 50 years to overcome the first 20.
Here's the good news: unlike other species, we are not restrained by our instincts alone. We are able to learn from our parents, our experiences and our culture.
Here's the bad news: Nobody matures without effort. It doesn't happen naturally. It takes a lot of hard work.
But what does it mean to be "mature?" Good question. So, let's answer it.
I have identified five characteristics of maturity. If you work to possess them all, you will have a happier, deeper, and more productive life.
One: Taking Control
Of course, you had no choice what era you were born in, or where you were born, or who your parents are. But with each year of childhood you attain more and more capacity to chart your own course. Yes, society and fate play a role, but cultivating your ability and willingness to make your own decisions, expands your ability to influence how your life unfolds. The only way to achieve maturity is to take charge of your life. Nothing empowers you as much as exercising that control. Refusing to act, waiting to be rescued and seeing yourself as a victim are sure signs of immaturity.
Two: Taking Responsibility.
I mean this in two ways.
The first way is simply to acknowledge that you’re responsible for what you do. If you make a mistake, acknowledge it. Don't alibi and don't blame others. This is an easy thing to say, but we all know it's very hard to do. A mature person does it. A mature person takes responsibility.
Second, is the willingness to take on obligations and fulfill them. For example, I got married and took on obligations to my wife and children. I have ethical obligations to my patients and my profession, even on days that I might not feel like it. A mature person doesn't see obligations as burdens but as something he willingly accepts and sees through to fulfillment.
Three: Containing Emotions.
I would never suggest that you should ignore your emotions, but you have to learn to contain them. Immature people lash out at their boss or their coworker if something doesn't go their way, or argue with their spouse when they come home, or turn to alcohol or drugs because of a rough day.
I often tell my patients that maturity can be measured by how much anxiety they can tolerate without acting out inappropriately against themselves or others. Mature people express their emotions in the right place, at the right time, in the right way. We are emotional beings, but we should never let go of the steering wheel; that is, we need to learn how and when to contain our emotions.
Four: Having Perspective.
An immature teenager will regard a pimple as a catastrophic eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, or will regard rejection by a girlfriend or boyfriend as the end of the world. Maturity comes from putting disappointments into perspective.
The reason we forgive a teenager's overreaction is because we understand it's probably the first time it's happened. But life's disappointments don't stop when you turn 21. Far from it. Disappointments of every variety, great and small, happen throughout life. The mature person learns from them and gets stronger each time he recovers. This kind of mature thinking is best expressed in the famous advice given to King Solomon: This too shall pass.

A psychiatrist, telling someone to CONTAIN their emotions is one of thee worst possible things you could ever advise to any person. That is literally coping 101. You should NEVER do that. MAYBE in a professional setting where you dont have much of a choice, and even then, that is still toxic to your own mental health. As a mature person, you are supposed to CONTROL your emotions, or at the very least, control your actions that follow afterwords, not bottle them up as if they aren't happening. Recognizing that you are feeling a certain way, accepting it, and taking steps to minimize the severity of what might come as a result is what a mature person does. Even if you recognize your emotions but chose to contain them, often warrants for some very dishonest communication skills. They do something to help them relax, they write, they COPE with the problem, they talk about it. They don't ignore them, or bottle them up, or however you would like to put it and then explode as a result. When you are faced with a difficult situation that is centered around gauging your emotions properly when responding to someone or something, containing your emotions can be very dangerous because you are not doing anything to minimize it internally, and thus conditioning yourself to ignore them. This guy is SEVERELY out of touch and needs his licence revoked. Its no wonder he has a 1.9/5 rating. Good lord what a mess.

This is why Christianity is inherently right wing. God directly commands us subvert institutions when we grow up. If the government legalizes something evil, does that mean that you should do it?

I sincerely hope this is not one of the channel's that gave you the "facts" that made you a conservative. I wholeheartedly believe there are legitimate reasons to be right wing (though for the life of me I've yet to see them), but this channel is one of the most horrendously biased sources of misrepresented shite I've ever come across. It's most clear in their various climate change videos where they all but outright lie, leaving out crucial information to trick the viewer onto their side (because they are literally funded by fracking billionaires, the Wilks Brothers, and so have a financial interest in pretending climate change isn't a problem), but those are far from the only ones. Please, I'm begging you, even if you want to be a conservative, do not take this channel at it's word. It's nothing but baseless propaganda.

The only thing I see from him that’s corroborated by other psychiatrists is, "repeating back what people say to you will assist you with understanding them on a deeper level" via Carl R. Rogers "On Becoming a Person." What definitely isn’t is this minimalizing of victimhood, and how looking at yourself as a victim is a sign of immaturity. Such ideas are the calling card of victimizers who tell you the exact same thing. "Stop complaining." or "Wow you really need to grow up." or "Look what you made me do." Such phrases are only used to mask the victimizer’s poor behavior. The first step in removing yourself from unhealthy relationships (intimate lovers, or a person from their society) is admitting that you are a victim.

@Wilo Polis I don't disagree. Most of my disagreements come up with him when he attempts to speak outside of his wheelhouse. Like saying non-religious regimes lead to mass genocide, or bill C-16 in Canada forces people to use the proper pronouns. In the realm of psychology/ psychoanalysis, I've yet to see something that I outright disagree with aside from his, "people can't get over bad habits like drug use without the use of psychadelic drugs to have a supernatural experience" and " we wouldn't have any art without religion." that came from his debate with Matt Dillahunty. Those are admittedly abridged versions of JPs arguments though.

@Wholesome You know, it's funny. The corporations that people complain so much about tend to be the ones that are publicly traded - ultimately owned by a collective of people. Meanwhile, those that are privately owned tend to behave (from what I've observed) much more decently. My father worked for a private, family-owned international manufacturing company. Non-unionized shops, all of them; not because of the company, but because the workers didn't want the unions there - ever. They tried several times and got shown the door every time. Why? Because the company treated the workers well: good wages and benefits, and even an option for profit-sharing. *That* is how capitalism is supposed to run, my friend. But trying to *force* everyone to do something similar is just slavery. Meanwhile, I have a simple objection to government running medical care; and it's the same argument I use against government running almost anything. Under capitalism, if the provider of a good or service (even an essential one) is doing a poor job of it, you can find another provider. And if you cannot find any good providers, you still have the option to appeal to the government. But if government controls it, what alternative provider will there be for you to switch to? And to whom would you be able to appeal? The government, I suppose... you could appeal to the courts! (hahaha!) Realistically speaking, admit it: you would be left with no redress whatsoever. My friend, I think you put entirely too much trust in the government. I would sooner trust a random stranger on the street with my children for a week than trust the government to do what you claim it would be able to do. The government already can't do what it's already promised to do, what makes you think it's capable of handling even bigger promises? Government has its place. I trust our federal government to defend our borders and overseas interests, keep internal peace, and maintain our public infrastructure - federal roads, bridges, ports, national parks, etc. Those few things, it is capable of doing better than anyone else. Everything else should be left, as the 10th Amendment says, "to the States respectively, or to the people." And most of what remains should be left to the people - including education and health care.
Wholesome 26 өдрийн өмнө
@Grant Johnson Okay, well I cant argue with you on that, its bad optics on my end. My bad. My thoughts on capitalism though, I believe that you are mistaken on the way that you define socialism. Sure there have been systems in the past where ALL of the means of production have ben seized by the government, but what I would like would and what a lot of peers of mine would like would be a system in which workers own the means of their own production when it comes to business, so no private ownership of a company only. You are free to buy your own things from houses to toothbrushes and privately own those things. Certain services like medical care however would be controlled by the government. The goal is to try and decentralize the way power is distributed in a system so that power doesn't become super concentrated because that leads to things like violent retribution when the stratification gets too high. Capitalism did this to Feudalism and changed over time to meet the needs of the people and now I believe that while it can still become better, a well designed socialist system would be even greater. One day still a new system might replace socialism maybe when automation gets so good that the need for many people to work goes away. Who knows, but it doesn't hurt to imagine.
Grant Johnson
Grant Johnson 26 өдрийн өмнө
@Wholesome Let's take that verse in context, shall we? Matthew 19:16-26 Now behold, one came and said to Him, “Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?” So He said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.” He said to Him, “Which ones?” Jesus said, “‘You shall not murder,’ ‘You shall not commit adultery,’ ‘You shall not steal,’ ‘You shall not bear false witness,’ ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ ” The young man said to Him, “All these things I have kept from my youth. What do I still lack?” Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions. When His disciples heard it, they were greatly astonished, saying, “Who then can be saved?” But Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Neither Jesus nor His father ever said owning personal property in general was wrong - if it was, why were there so many laws protecting personal property in the Torah? But being *greedy* about one's wealth is. And Jesus knew that *that* young man's wealth was holding him back from doing much good. But I ask you: how could that young man have *had* money to give away if he hadn't first earned (or inherited) that money? How much good would that young man's wealth do for the poor if he had no wealth to give to begin with? Capitalism isn't about making money "by any means necessary". It's simply one way to produce and distribute goods and services - and a generally effective one at that. Is it perfect? Of course not. It's an imperfect system in a broken world with limited resources inhabited by sinful people operating on limited time. But capitalism has a far better track record at reducing and eliminating poverty than *any* other economic system. (And don't try to cite the Amish - they are capitalist, too.) Socialism (government-run economy), on the other hand, doesn't produce wealth, which people can then give to the less wealthy. It consumes it, leaving everyone except those in power impoverished. I still don't see anything about Jesus supporting socialism any more than I see Jesus castigating capitalism. Try again.
Wholesome 26 өдрийн өмнө
@Grant Johnson Mathew 19:24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God." Jesus doesnt want people to worship wealth which is what Capitalism is all about, making money by any means necessary. Wealth is power and if you dont get it someone else will. Things like tripple bottom lines are just ways to escape criticism and prolong the sale of ones product or service. Oh lets not forget that workers are extremely expendable even though, you know they are people. Its so hard to get even Socail democracy its insane. Even though that works within the bounds of capitalism, because it would tax the rich too much. Edit: its more of an inference than anything. Im not religious and I imagine that there are other economic models beyond capitalsim and socailism that have yet to be imagined.

I personally believe that you have it backwards. The Left wants to destroy this country and democracy itself in the pursuit of power. They want to destroy the nuclear family unit, they want to destroy private healthcare, and they want to destroy private education in the pursuit of creating total dependence on the federal government (Power!!). As for intolerance, there is no greater intolerant force than the left. The left will curse, berate, cancel, and destroy the lives of anyone who disagrees with their agenda. People are afraid to exercise their first amendment right for fear of bodily, financial, or emotional harm. The right isn’t perfect, but they’re getting better. They allow people to express their own beliefs!!!!! People aren’t perfect, but the left wants to destroy our freedom and democracy. This is the greatest country on earth and that is a fact. It was founded on the idea that people have individual rights and the federal government is only there to protect said rights. No other country was created on these ideals. I don’t believe the right’s goal is to betray democracy, I believe it’s to protect it, from the government. Thank you and have a good day

@Snake Man448 The anecdotal accounts you can find for yourself. Some elementary schools in New Jersey, Florida, and California (all states in which I have attorney friends) have prohibited the phrase. It wouldn't surprise me if other accounts of the ban have been exaggerated or entirely made up by the likes of Sean Hannity and Mark Levin, but it is, nevertheless, true as far as these specific examples go.

@Snake Man448 Please. "Merry Christmas" is forbidden in public schools and insular groups of miserable victims have no other purpose in the world than to scream at people who wish it upon them. And there are dozens of anecdotes about particular companies and some government agencies banning the phrase in favor of "cultural sensitivity". (As to the private companies, this is their right---but they're still assholes for doing it.)

Jesus Christ Dr. Stephen is so far out of left field. He has zero clue what he's talking about. He's using all these words and descriptions incorrectly. One is not to contain, but control their emotions. No psychologist receiving their degree during the past 20 years would say such a ridiculous statement.

This doctor is condescending. He mixes intuition with shoddy science and backs it up with nothing but his appearance of authority. He says "I have identified 5 characteristics of maturity..." So what? Why should I (or you) care what this guy has identified? The fact that I have identified that this guy is a condescending person should carry about as much weight. This entire presentation from the tone to the faceal expresions is about lecturing down to the audiance... he's not an equal, sharing science or even personal advice. This is not an effective way to communicate with someone... so I think this message is more for people who agree with the statements, but about others (be they kids, or some race or religion they don't like). The sad thing is, I think that there is some truth to what he says. If you believe that you can make your situation better - even if you probably can not - you are more likely to attempt to do so, and more likely to succeed. If you want to see this message delivered well, check out Neil Degrass Tison ( But this guy takes it so far that it becomes laughable and worse, it provides people an argument to disregard people who are different from themselves. Rather then trying to understand others, if you buy into this guys BS you can just know that they are immature. More divisive language is not what we need right now! Lastly, who is he to say that an outburst is inappropriate. We can not know someone else's condition. Maybe there is a good reason why they did what they did. To simply label them as immature is, frankly, a bad position for a doctor to take.

@Gen Meow I think the important thing is to look beyond the way the message is presented, and think more about the content. I realized that my reply to you was immature, and that I had a long way to go. As he said in the video, keeping things in perspective is important. And you helped me to understand that. Thanks.

Thank you for the kind reply, @Big Brother. My issue with this video, along with a lot of PragerU, is that it is someone's opinion masquerading as facts. Like you, I agree with some of what Marmer has to say. However, the way he presents it along with the silly strawmen he creates to make his points all smell like yet another old person shaking his finger at the Beatles because their hair is too long. I hope you also have a nice day.

@Gen Meow Hi! Thanks for your comment. I just believe that the ideas about maturity are good ones, that there are elements of truth in what he says. I don't know if it's complete definition, but I don't think they are lies or falsehoods. There is some good in what he says, it seems to me. Sorry to have given you such a curt, discourteous reply to your comment - it was immature of me. I hope you have a nice day. Best regards, Meow! (I take it you're a "cat person" - if so, check out the movie "when the cat's away") Ciao, Meow!

I did try to grow up, it was called the US Army! Loaded guns in my face, punches, forced to stay awake for a whole 2 weeks with only 2 hours of sleep per night! Then they kicked me out, got a job, things were going okay, but didn't get paid good, so couldn't afford practically anything. Didn't have enough to buy a house so went from apartment to house to townhouse on leases with roomies. Then I got in bad credit situation, was scammed too, and basically it just killed most of my motivation to do practically anything. Tell that congressman's son who got a full ride to Harvard how easy it was to grow up before I get this video again. Growing up is expensive!

Isn’t containing emotions immature? I understand that there’s a place and time for everything, but shouldn’t people be able to stand up for themselves? If you’re in an environment where you’re being mistreated, you owe it to yourself to let others know you have rights, you cannot allow people to think they can mess with you just for the sake of being “in control of your emotions”. A mature thing to do would be to voice your issues.

"What I learned is family and Friends seeking assistance dr. Marmer provides zero evaluations and allows unqualified incompetent persons to manage his clients care. Dr. Marmer would write refills without ever evaluating his patient and take the advice of an interventionist to increase the dosage. Dr. Marmer went to trial but due to inefficient efforts of attorneys leaving out evidence the case was dropped not due to lack of negligence but due to lack of proper trial etiquette. Other trial we learn mr. Warren Boyd has psychiatrist on his payroll she prescribed to his clients without face-to-face evaluations or drug testing. "
