Ben Shapiro joins Michael Knowles to discuss The Federalist Papers, a collection of essays written by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay. They discuss the founders’ vision for a limited government that protects the God-given rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

If Ben Shapiro has been my history teacher, I would’ve paid more attention in class. Seriously, he explains in a way that is easy to understand and in a way that holds my interest. I will definitely make an effort to read the Federalist Papers.

'When a man unprincipled in private life desperate in his fortune, bold in his temper, possessed of considerable talents, having the advantage of military habits - despotic in his ordinary demeanour - known to have scoffed in private at the principles of liberty - when such a man is seen to mount the hobby horse of popularity - to join in the cry of danger to liberty - to take every opportunity of embarrassing the General Government & bringing it under suspicion - to flatter and fall in with all the non sense of the zealots of the day - It may justly be suspected that his object is to throw things into confusion that he may ‘ride the storm and direct the whirlwind.' -- Alexander Hamilton August 19, 1792’ Alexander Hamilton nailed Trump's entire act in 1792. Impressive.

The big problem today then is, many of our youth and citizens in the USA 🇺🇸 in 2020/21 are corrupt, are not virtuoso, are not fair, are not rational, are narcissistic and selfish, are radical and violent for bad not good and are not bound together by one ideal of American patriotism! Socialists and Communists have infiltrated and are coming close to taking over our political and legal system and poisoning our youth within liberal progressive agendas in our colleges and universities over the last 60 plus years!!

I agree wholeheartedly that all need to read and understand the Federalist papers, the philosophy that underlies the constitution, how it’s structure was intended to work, and how it did work and has changed over hundreds of years. The power of the executive branch has grown far too big, without a doubt. At the same time, we need to acknowledge realities of the 21st century and see how the incredible experiment of the founders has spread throughout the world, and learn from the lessons of other democratic countries worldwide. What we started has been tried and tested in a modern world in a variety of forms successfully. We need to heed the wisdom and lessons the founders so brilliantly understood, for instance that power corrupts, and to look for all places throughout our society where power has become concentrated, and corruption has resulted, and seek to break up that power, and end that corruption. Read as well the Farewell Address of George Washington, and his dire warning of the dangers of partisanship. That parties are another force of corruption and destruction. We need wise leaders and thinkers to navigate treachery of all kinds. We now not only have weapons of mass destruction, we have weapons of mass psychological warfare unimaginable in the 18th century,. Look at how democracy is being destroyed. Read How Democracies Die, and watch The Great Hack and The Social Dilemma. There has been a slow coup that targeted how the functioning of our government relied upon the fabric of a virtuous society, on the honor system, and that fabric is being systematically undermined by nefarious and mercenary forces, akin to evil so well portrayed in the original 1960s film Bedazzled. That the clearly possessed anti-Christian Ayn Rand could become a heroine of the right (look at her eyes in the Dan Rather interviews with her) is evidence George Washington’s anti-party warnings are on the mark. In these pandemic days of The Tiger King, the Cult of Trumpism, and child porn traffickers, how do we restore unity and the fabric of society?

Over the top, cosmetic, shallow and lacking the true historical facts concerning the original "Americans" i.e. native American indigenous nation's and those aboriginal culture's and people's long since on the American landscapes before the arrival of the European especially the English. Further, the European founding fathers learned their system of government from various pre English countries, as academic fact Thomas Jefferson himself studied the Ottoman empire, Native American systems of government and Islamic jurisprudence. He in fact, alongside many including John Adams owned extensive books on Islamic jurisprudence and government. The Articles of Confederation was composed of many ethnic groups, which is why there are so many Treaties during that time, before the statehood of the colonies and concepts of a federal constitution, see Treaties of Tripoli and Marrakesh from 1777, to 1786, and 1796 to 1836. Slavery was a much bigger issue of course than the childish near dismal of holding millions in human bondage from the White House to the southern plantations. This revisionist white supremacists narrative is a dying mythical utopian fanatical fantasy, and will not stand the test of time.

The REAL Federalists were Jefferson and his "anti"-federalists. Hamilton and his ilk were actually nationalists who co-opted the label "Federalist" for themselves. The anti-federalists were the ones who wanted the Bill of Rights because they feared the Constitution created a large powerful state. They were correct. 4:10 Shapiro begins here by describing what to my mind are GOOD things about the Articles of Confederation, but he deems that government "weak". Well if your goal is freedom and liberty then a weak state is a feature not a problem. 18:23 Here he admits that the Anti-Federalists, which is NOT what they were (they were the actual Federalists), were correct in their warnings about how the Constitution would create a far larger state then what was intended or was desirable. The Jeffersonians were correct.

um no the federalist papers is only half of the guide book for our constitution. there is its opponent the anti federalist papers as well. come on guys really that should be obvious. not to mention Ben Franklin was far more spot on than either Hamilton or Madison on a lot of issues. as an example, Franklin argued for term limits in congress and not paying any member of the federal government (congress, vice pres and pres) from tax payer money with the exceptions of supreme court justices.

You claim to have a law degree from Harvard, you know then most assuredly what the hard copy edition of U.S. Code 3002 section 15 (a) describes all members of the BAR as the national communist lawyers guild,: that you operate on two levels of conflicting interests and you are obligated to the communist court's ponzi revenue corruption and you don't give a rat's ass about law of this common law land, but will do everything possible to squeeze as much billing hours as possible for defending people who haven't actually broken any law.

In addition to reading the Federalist papers, I would also recommend reading the "Anti-Federalist" -- a collection of essays explaining why we *shouldn't* adopt the Constitution. The collection I used had 85 sections, one for each of the Federalist Papers; reading both together gives you a good sense of the debate that happened at the time. While it's tempting to brush off the "Anti-Federalist" as the "losers" of the debate, we would do well to remember that we wouldn't have a Bill of Rights if it weren't for the Anti-Federalists, and some of the dire predictions of the Anti-Federalists *did* come true. (Brutus, in particular, warned about how the "Commerce Clause" would lead to all *sorts* of abuse. I can't remember if I read that warning in the Anti-Federalist, or from some other collection, though.) At one point, I was determined to read *all* such articles published, both for and against the Constitution, but discovered that trying to do so would be futile. Such a collection exists, but it spans something like 17 volumes. There was a *lot* of the debate about the Constitution; we would do well to remember at least *some* of it!

What's missing from this video, and many of the comments, is context. So many statements about "the founding fathers" - as if the framers were some sort of monolith of common philosophical viewpoints. The Federalist Papers were very purpose written - aimed at persuading the voters of NY to ratify. Other states, with differing economic foundations, likely would not have been swayed by them. Patriots in the revolution (Patrick Henry) rejected the Constitution, and framers almost immediately divided themselves over how to interpret it - Madison and Jefferson sharply rejecting many of the arguments Hamilton put forth. And this matters because when we discuss the Federalist Papers with all of that context we realize that there has ALWAYS been dissention in our political society, never been universal agreement, and no side (libs or cons, Dems or Repubs) can actually claim to be the inheritors of the constitutional era. The problem with PragerU is that they represent themselves as a source searching for broad and deep understandings, but they create shallow, unnuanced arguments that are persuasive to the like-minded and rejectable by those who think otherwise precisely because they fail to engage with complexity.
