If your teacher has assigned this, it's important to understand that Prager U isn't a learning institution but a conservative propaganda outlet. By all means, watch to learn about your teacher's biases, but then go hear from the other side, as well. Philosophy Tube, Contrapoints and Big Joel are good places to start. In fact, Big Joel has a couple of videos about the problems, both humorous and serious, with Prager U.

Well the free market supports fracking and coal so I don't think it works. We need a collectivist and ecological model to go carbon negative. Remember that while the flash drive may have been invented by a private company Turing's models of computation and the integrated circuit were developed by states. Furthermore, gift economy free software is generally superior to free market proprietary software, and so the same should be expected of energy and other sectors.

Neither one mentioned the trillion dollar oil wars in their cost discussion. Oil companies get massive subsidies and leads to constant $trillion dollar wars. Allowing Americans to get off the grid and getting out of wars is a win win.

R.J. Dreger Ya, I know you didn’t mention it. I have to refresh my memory on this issue. I just remember being pissed off because I think the whole point of solar panels is to get off the grid. I do know a guy that has a cabin in a small town in Nevada and he is completely off the grid and he has an excellent battery storage system. Now I am very curious. I want to call a solar panel salesman tomorrow. I know this is a political issue because of the regulation aspect.

I did not mention, or know any laws about the grid, but it would be hard and take a little while to get backup power to someone's house or whatever, if you plan to live there it might not be smart, but if it might be a house you might live in for vacation or time off it might be ok, but I'd connect it to the grid so the extra power from the panels can be sold and I would get money

Back in 2018, Leftists, Democrats, and their useful idiot Tofu Warriors got Proposition 112 on the ballot in Colorado. The voters rejected the measure that would have all but killed the oil & gas industry in the state, especially in GOP controlled Weld County where most oil & gas production occurs. In 2019, Democrats in the legislature and the Governor's office passed Senate Bill 181 into law that gave the COGCC (Colorado Oil & Gas Conservation Commission) new marching orders that effectively is Prop. 112 Lite. New setback requirements are starting to be made public, and although not as stringent as the original Prop. 112; they appear to be poised to strike a serious blow to the industry in the state. Even wind and solar require oil & gas to be viable. Wind turbines have massive gearboxes that require large quantities of lubricants; plastics are made from oil & gas, coal is turned into coke for steel making. A modern technological society is impossible without oil, gas and coal; even if they no longer are used as fuel sources.

Jesus no. You just... can't. Capitalism does sometimes create finer products thanks to competition, but there is sometimes a hidden cost to it, like the disregard for safety measures or the ludicrously low wages paid to employees, or unsafe products or the exploitation of the environment in order to maximize profit. Think of capitalism as a board game. There are rules to keep things fair and balanced, and there is always a way to get to win even though your opponent got the first move. Neoliberalism or the free market is a perverse system, a board game without rules is no game at all, only a sandbox where the guy with the headstart is unstoppable and capable of bullying everyone into submission. Capitalism isn't supposed to be "fair" but it has to have rules for it to work. Maximizing profit by minimizing cost is not only unethical, it is crooked and dangerous. Remember what happened at chernobyl, with their lack of safety standards...

@David Winokur climate is subject to change, yes. But the problem is, our planet has only been habitable to life for a fraction of it's existence. We have only existed for a very short amount of time relative to other life forms on our planet. When the earth first formed the climate was extreme, fluctuating from periods of ice and snow to swampy heat. The climate during the age of the dinosaurs was different from our climate today, as there was more oxygen and humidity in the atmosphere. Now, if we continue to pollute our biosphere out planet may be rendered unsuitable for complex life. It will take at least a million years for the last traces of our industrial revolution to dissipate. Our planet heals very slowly. Or not at all.

I am in California and I am surprised how little talk points were given to the plastic ban regulation. CA was the first to go large scale ban on plastic, instead of going to a charge-based item to incentivize reduction like other countries, CA just went cold-turkey ban and demonized plastic. Gone are the thin plastic bags and in are the super thick durable plastic bags that are meant to be used dozens if not hundreds of times. For food stamp or CA nutrition programs users, they get the thick plastic bag for free. In some part of CA neighborhoods, majority of the customers are on those programs, so the plastic ban didn't translate to systematic reduction. Then you have those so-called liberal green supporters, whom think reusable bags are the next best thing. They ended up using lots of water, detergent and electricity to wash and dry the reusable bags, as if those steps have no impact to the environment. And then we had COVID, CA suddenly knee-jerked and banned reusable plastic bags. To fix that challenge of shopping bags, stores were giving put those durable plastic bags for free but the kicker is you CAN'T reuse that reusable plastic bags as soon as you walked out of the store, so people suddenly started to throw away very heavy duty thick plastic bag after just 1 use. I suspect the amount of plastic waste from that alone out weighed what was saved through banning thin plastic bags. Heavy-handed regulations almost always backfire... We should let free market come up with innovations to deal with energy issues and challenges, and we should not demonize any specific energy source. Multi-modal forms of energy will provide safety net should any one form fails, and it would also drive innovations and energy efficiency improvement. We should also educate consumers to reduce usage. If everyone of us turn off lights when not needed, or use one less Starbucks' cups, or drive a bit slower, those small behavioral changes would accumulate to generate meaningful energy consumption reductions.

Climate change is about the increasing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, which is subsequently leading to higher ocean temperatures. It costs more money to store a bunch of oil that won't even sell bc of the oil crisis. That is the definition of inefficiency. Tesla cars last 3x as long as your gas guzller, has better fuel economy-- and it is only getting more and more efficient and cheaper to make. We shouldn't be wasting our money investing in old technology while other countries get ahead, for one. But yes, this is also a climate crisis issue because ocean temperatures rising will spell disaster for civilization as a whole.. Why do you think all these mega rich people are building luxury bunkers?? They freaking know, but they don't care bc they're just gonna keep profiting anyway that they can. (Not my problem) "Since the 1970s, the oceans have sopped up more than 90 percent of all the excess heat energy trapped by CO2. Because the oceans are enormous, and because water takes much more energy to heat up than air, that translates to a temperature increase of a little more than one degree Fahrenheit, on average, over the past century."

One aspect of the alternative energy debate are the unseen environmental impact of these "Better" energy sources. The production of solar panels involves the use of highly toxic metals and gasses. Of particular concern to me is that much of this production can only be done in countries with less stringent environmental law. In short we get the clean, although highly inefficient energy, and these countries suffer the environmental damage.

Jay Dunbar
Jay Dunbar Сарын өмнө
@Jacobus Kurnia Kaalapaking deregulation does not mean removal of all regulations, it doesnt exclude that option but that is the most extreme possible option under the umbrella. Monopolies are a none issue, they can only maintain themselves in 3 ways, staying within what the market will accept, violence, or the government regulations enforced by government violence. So long as violence is prevented a monopoly can not be maintained outside of what the market will tolerate. Raise the prices and new companies will arrive to take advantage of higher profit potential, the increase in supply has a guaranteed effect on the price. No they can't buy up companies indefinitely, its just not fiscally possible without the government artificially raising the price to enter the market. Without government aid the more businesses theh buy up the higher the market rate for that type of business will climb, and the higher it climbs the more will enter. There's a reason why big tech companies are ok with being regulated, they can easily absorb the cost of compliance. The new start ups however will have a much harder time, regulations always favor the establishment not new competition.

You can't say that the poor always lose under a free market system. There are too many stories of folks who used the free market system to uplift themselves out of poverty. It takes hard work and too many don't want to work hard. Statistics show that in developing countries, free market has uplifted more folks out of poverty than government socialism. Redistribution methods just produces more lazy, envious, and greedy groups of people. Those dependent on someone else for survival eventually want what the worker can afford but no work ethic makes them greedy, jealous, and ungrateful so they become just like a spoiled rotten brats like a child who has never learned responsibilities. Is a free market systm perfect? No! But education, hard work, delayed gratification teaches gratitude, work ethic, and a more responsible person. Yes there will be some greedy, but the majority share their wealth, invest in the future, and help others. Where has a true socalist system worked? And don't say some Scandinavian country. Those are NOT socialist they are free market countries with super high tax rates.
Jay Dunbar
Jay Dunbar Сарын өмнө
Advantage can only be taken by violence, and the government holds the monopoly on legal violence. The stuff that capitalism has been blamed for throughout history is always backed by government legislation. Even when looking back at child labor in the industrial revolution, it was a far better option then starving to death which was the other option available so at the time it actually saved lives. At that time kids working was not abnormal, they typically worked along side the parents otherwise. Yes it seems horrible by our standards today but placing current standards on the past is placing the cart before the horse, need to learn the lesson before we can incorporate it into society. We only know kids make terrible factory workers because it was tried, lesson learned it is now societally unacceptable regardless if it is against the law or not.

One thinks that the reason the "human-made climate-change" narrative is pushed so hard is to (re-)institute a/the global carbon tax, which will make a handful of people (who have a great deal of influence over what comes out of propaganda outlets) _extremely_ wealthy, as they have, or will have, a huge number of "carbon credits" to sell on a carbon-credit exchange. Furthermore, a global carbon tax will be the first major stepping stone to global governance.

The utilities are in business to make a profit. I've said for years that if solar and wind were highly efficient, cost effective, and able to supply our nation's energy needs, the companies would be all over *green* power. BUT they're not so what does that tell you?
grondhero Сарын өмнө
I think most, if not all, of utility companies are public utilities, meaning politicians (state & local government) tell them what to do. If they could always make a profit, then there wouldn't be blackouts or brownouts in the New England area and there wouldn't be so many electrical fires on the West Coast. (California has the worst grid in the country - with their high prices, you'd _think_ they'd be one of the best if it were free market.) Some states _forbid_ people being off-grid; they actually fine people for doing so. Thankfully, I live in Texas where you can actually _sell_ your energy back to the utility companies. I think if we got rid of a lot of government red tape and bureaucracy, then we'd be able to see better "green energy" solutions and at lower prices.

Gas is not green. It's CO2 production. Which we are kinda trying to stop. This is because CO2 is the most prominent greenhouse gas.

Ok, I want to address that they say that none of the energy types can support the needs of a state. But the point of using wind, solar, energy, and nuclear is that you have multiple sources of energy and with battery capacity advancements over the past decade, we can maintain supplemental energy. And there is room for innovative growth for solar and wind power generation, which, yes, the free market will take care of

What free market? Show me the contention between any corporations. They all move as one unit - day in, and day out. The only capitalism going on is the mom and pops, and they're constantly under attack, and currently being decimated. - "Free market" - don't make me laugh. Our entire "market" is one huge anti-trust violation.
LavishPatchKid Сарын өмнө
@Martin P Absolutely. And the biggest joke - America isn't even supposed to be part of any 'global organization'. They literally think treason is, "selling your nation out to one nation, not a conglomerate of nations'. As if there's any difference. - I highly doubt the founders intended 'right to regulate trade' as 'right to give that right away to an entity that isn't even American'. lol - We're in a real bad spot, and most are too dumb to even realize.
Martin P

Then you've got to add in NGO's and global organisations. Suggesting we live in a ''free market society'' is just comedy gold. Libertarianism is just a meme but some people take it seriously.
LavishPatchKid Сарын өмнө
@Deborah Allen Exactly. We are under 100% corporate rule, and everything else is just a show to get people to keep showing up and validating their pseudo "democratic" systems.

LavishPatchKid Сарын өмнө
@FactsOverFeelings Matter That's far more realistic. And being corporatism quite literally controls the state, to the point it might as well be an attack dog, there is just 'them'.

How did the guest not mention Nuclear fission and at some point nuclear FUSION based energy as the energy sources of the next 100 years? Those are clean, provide enormous amounts of power and are cheap once set up and fission is already in use and unless you have extreme idiots/ppl that are very incompetent running the plants the safety record is amazingly great.

You do realize that in a free market the entire gaming industry would collapse because nobody would make anything out of fear of having their games stolen right?
videakias3000 Сарын өмнө
@Jacob Howell I don't make the definitions you know,I point them out.
videakias3000 Сарын өмнө
@Jacob Howell the definition of a free market is: Market with no government regulations were the prices of products are not determined by monopolies. Copy-rights give monopolies to their owners therefore the markets aren't free and since they are limited specifically to the markets instead of everywhere(unlike laws of physocal property)the are government regulations. Laws like physical property can exist in free markets, but laws for i telectual property by definition cannot and thats because physical and intelectual property are different . Physical property neither has expiration date nor fells under fair use.
Jacob Howell
Jacob Howell Сарын өмнө
Why does "free" means "absolutely zero limiting factors" to you? By that definition, if we eliminated every other law except for "don't murder" we wouldn't be "free" there either, and that's really stupid.

is there another good way to get natural gas out of the ground beside fracking? If there is one, why are they not talking about it? Because fracking is not the answer in a totaly free market because negative externality exist (buring tap water and stuff)

Perfect analysis, gentlemen! The odd irony is that if we relied upon proven, traditional forms of energy, e.g., fossil fuels, natural gas and coal, our vibrant economy could someday diversify its energy portfolio. Yes -- indeed, the market never lies, never fails. In summary, the renewal energy movement promotes a false doctrine of wellness and "clean planet" as a replacement for wholesome Judeo-Christian values within the interior landscape of human souls. In short - a shell game. VOTE TRUMP - Thank you, Prager University. My book "Emblem America" will inspire you further. MA

It is also by far the most committed nation as far as the use of thorium fuel is concerned, and no other country has done as much neutron physics work on thorium. _ In March 2020 the government said that Kakrapar 3&4 and Rajasthan 7&8 were expected to be commissioned in October 2020, September 2021, March 2022 and March 2023, respectively. I cannot be above 80° for medical and natural reasons. I am male, super high/fast metabolism, super hot natural body temp. I get nosebleeds and fevers when it goes up to 90°. Dr. says I must remain cool. All my life I have kicked all the blankets off my bed at night. I am most comfortable at around 60°. That is warm. At 75-80° I am dripping with sweat. I keep my AC at 78° mostly, but it is hot, and I must also use fans and sometimes ice.

robwhitesays Сарын өмнө
Not that I think the government should be able to tell you where to set your thermostat, but 78 is completely reasonable in Phoenix. Haha. We feel bad when we go to 76 because it runs all day, and we actually get cold. Hahaha. Even when we lived in CA we would generally open the windows except on days over 90.

Natural Gas? You mean the same energy source President Obama praised as a cleaner and more environmentally friendly source of energy as opposed to Trump's fictional "Clean Coal and Clean Diesel"?
theylied1776 Сарын өмнө

@debandgary Wi No, Coal and Diesel can not be burned cleanly. This is why Europe is abandoning Diesel cars. And Coal can't be burned cleanly, that has always been a pure lie. This is why several Power plants have converted over to Natural Gas.
