I agree with most of this, not all teachers operate this way. Although, there were many times my college class discussions were heading left and I kept quiet, being a 40-year old republican female, my opinion was unpopular & not worth the argument IMO. Unfortunately, I needed that piece of paper to be considered for a job. 🤷

I enjoyed college AT THE TIME, but with 20/20 hindsight in my 30's, it truly wasn't necessary regarding my earning potential. The best paying jobs I've had (in the energy sector) did not require it.

No, it guarantees you debt, but it also guarantees you the ability to get hired by a company to tell people how to do a job you yourself have no actual experience doing.

College is neutral, just like a job. An engineering or medical degree = success, whereas a gender studies degree = feces. Just like a job, a doctor or engineer is very different than a porn star.

Depends on what you consider success. Most of my HS classmates that got a degree are still at their parents and working at starting positions barely related to their profession. I on the other hand have 5 years experience in the workforce, paid off 8k in student loans I acrued over 2 wasted semesters within a year, I own my car, and pay all my bills with my own money on time. I do not own a house yet, as I live by myself and am ok with renting as rates are reasonable (I rent a 1000sq. ft. single bedroom, 2 bathroom, 2 walk-in closet apartment for $545 a month.) but plan on getting a house as soon as I find the mother of my children. So, again, depends on your definition of success.

@Diego67HD I'm 22 and I'm already a supervisor making 45k a year and I've got 20k in investments. I couldn't care less as I am happy and the only thing I'm missing is a wife and kids. if I need to go back to school to get a degree I've got 40 years to do so. Now I understand what I've done is not for everyone. It took a lot of 16 hour days in a factory to get here but I enjoyed the labor. I also have different wants as I have no desire to wear designer, live in a city, and drive a Mercedes. I'm a very humble person and am ok living without clout in the sticks. End of the day, you decide your own happiness, not a set of statistics. Edit: spaces.

Great anecdote, now do you believe that you have a great deal of upward mobility without a degree? Do you have any data on average wages of college graduates versus high school grads? Everyone knows you’ll be worse off during college/immediately after due to all the debt and lost work experience. But 10,20,30 years down the line a lack of degree can become a serious limit on your salary and job level.

Well it depends on a few things. I personally believe that success is rather subjective (one could be looking for financial success, while others consider being a full time mother/father successful). We also need people to go to trade school (sweet mercy we need blue collar workers) and grad school students.

College equals indoctrination. My state seal in Colorado has the freemasonic all seeing eye and the Jesuit facia which is a sign of Roman fascism and imperialism. Secret societies are the enemy and they need to be destroyed and removed and stopped into the ground never to grow again. State run colleges will only give you a state education controlled by Seacrets society members and freemasons. If they are not teaching you about revolution against the government and education is completely worthless. We are at the time in this world and in life where we need people to be educated on how to dismantle the government and destroy the corporate fascism that we are living under while returning America to the Haven it was meant to be.

The answer is a resounding yes. College teaches a lifelong pursuit of knowledge. The celebration of ignorance embraced by the MAGA rally movement is revolting and embarrassing. We’ve gone from “knowledge is power” to “I ain’t no libtard professor”

As Socrates would say; being educated doesnt make you a good person it makes you educated, being rich doesnt make you a good person it makes you rich. In modern society we conflate education, and wealth with happiness and success which leaves us, often, in a perpetual search for more and more stuff (education, more wealth, ect ect.) thinking it will bring us happiness, thus the cycle never ends. It's the blight of western culture.

I was saying years ago that college was dumb. When my parents said you go to college and pick a subject, but you sometimes get jobs in something that your degree didn't cover, i found it to be quite disturbing. Then you have to take ancient blah blah history to study to be an engineer. Now it's gender studies and anything that's hating on America studies. College needs to cease to exist in its present state.

The problem I find with college is that it did teach me a lot knowledge-wise, but it didn't teach me tangible skills. I went to a rigorous business school but really had nothing to show for it. I don't think it was the wrong decision, but I encourage people to build and develop their skills throughout college to avoid being over-educated yet under-skilled.

No, it doesn't. I dropped out of high-school, joined the Army, became disciplined, got a trade, saved money, invested, bought a house. Retired with a pension, and now trade stocks. I'm very well off, with a crap education, and poor background, but a good work ethic, and a disciplined mind. Work hard, retire young. Be wise with your money. Save or Invest every spare cent, dont treat it as spear cash, its not. That's it. Your as wealthy as you push yourself to be. FYI. I'm still in my 30s

Just want to point out that through COVID only 2% of those with bachelors degrees lost their jobs. This contrasts with 20% job loss for those who only have a high school diploma. Obviously there are trade school alternatives but a major in STEM is a free pass to success.

College in itself is not a “dead end” just as high school in itself is not a “dead end” either. It one of the paths that are available to learn more than you did in high school. What you do and experience along that route is what is important on your journey to your goal.

It's difficult to get rich working for someone else. The most likely path to a very good income is running your own business. The best way to learn business? Not college. Go to work for a small business and pay attention to how it is done in the real world. You'll get paid while you educate yourself. Then start your own business. Be persistent and learn from your mistakes.

I went to college and although I appreciate the skills I learned, I wouldn’t call myself successful based on the student debt I still carry. You don’t need college to be successful, but you do need a plan.

It depends. I was lucky to be in a college that did adapt. I had very few lectures as opposed to the method in which my parents were taught. Everything we needed to know we read on the internet, and the teacher was more of a guide to tell us where to find the best available information, what is and what isn't important out of the tons of information out there, they shared their professional experience in the field, taught us the practical stuff, shared real life cases, encouraged informed discussion, and most importantly taught us to think critically an organize ideas. I hope other colleges keep that way.

College doesn't always equal success, it depends on what you choose to major in. I waisted my time and money getting a useless degree and now I'm a middle-aged loser. I was the first to go to college in my family and everyone around me would always advise me to just get a degree in what I like, as long as I had a degree I'd be successful... wrong. I should've gone into a trade school looking back.

Ask your college "counselor" what average pay is regarding certain degrees - where VP or higher is removed from the statistical pool on average income. If he has an answer [and it is correct], the lost time of a student loan applied to lifetime earnings may have you going right back to work and come back later - without the loan [if that degree is really where you want to go]. You would be amazed at how many tradesmen out there discover they actually make more than the loan officer at their bank when it's time to buy a house.

Unfortunately, college is not for everyone and it really does depend what you major in PLUS what you want to do with that major. I will also say it is terribly overpriced and everything i learned could’ve been shortened to 2-3 years. I would say most people go because they’ll be called a loser if they don’t go. In the end I went to apply for a job and they were offering 15 bucks an hr. to start and I turned it down. I opened up my own tree trimming business and earning 300+/- an hr. I also make architectural plans at 35 an hour but I do this as a side job. You don’t have to try college!! Get good at something and open a business!
