Is California Going Up in Flames?

California used to be the Golden State. Now the Blackout State might be more accurate, as the fear of wildfires forces public utilities to periodically power down. But wildfires have always been part of California’s history, so what’s changed? Radio talk show host John Kobylt’s answer to this burning question might surprise you.

In 2019, California became the first state ever to intentionally deny electricity to its own citizens. No power for your home, your Tesla, your cell phone or, maybe, your oxygen tank.
This is California we’re talking about-not some impoverished third-world country. California.
If it were a sovereign nation, it would be the fifth-largest economy in the world-ahead of the UK and France! But in the hot, dry months of late summer and early fall, it can no longer provide electricity to its own citizens. It has to shut down its aging power lines or risk starting another catastrophic fire.
In 2018, the town of Paradise burned to the ground. Over 10,000 homes were destroyed; 85 people died. In 2017, the Redwood fire killed nine people.
California has always had wildfires. But now the fire threat is worse than ever. Why?
For the answer, we should look to one of the state’s leading citizens-Leonardo Di Caprio: “The reason these wildfires have worsened is because of climate change.” Case closed? Well, not quite.
But Leo isn’t wrong. Climate change has made the problem worse. He’s just not right in the way he thinks he is.
Let’s get into it.
Long before “global warming” became “climate change,” Californians had to deal with fires. The hot, bone-dry summer and fall winds, thick forests, and dense brush that cover good portions of the state made sure of that.
As the state’s population grew, the citizens, always aware of fire risk, took steps to mitigate that risk-sometimes intentionally, sometimes not. First, there were large-scale logging operations. These helped thin the forest. Then there were “controlled burns”-fires purposely set to clear areas of brush in fire zones which were then quickly extinguished.
As the influence of the environmental movement grew more pronounced at the end of the last century and into this one, the state’s policy changed. First, new regulations sharply curtailed logging operations. Cutting down trees for lumber was depicted as almost an act of cruelty. Even clearing dead trees was frowned upon.
Controlled burns were viewed the same way. It was much better, the environmentalists contended, to let nature do its thing. And, as housing became more expensive in the big cities, developers started to build homes further from metropolitan areas and closer to the wilderness.
Parallel to this was the state’s green energy mandate. Governor Jerry Brown declared that California would be powered entirely by renewable energy-mostly wind and solar-by 2045. Tremendous pressure was put on Pacific Gas and Electric, the state’s largest energy company, to get started on this project.
Here’s where Leo gets it right, if unintentionally.
The green energy mandate turned the power company’s attention and resources away from the power grid and to wind and solar. How did this lead to new and deadlier fires? Let’s put the pieces of the puzzle together.
Wildfires can be started in all sorts of ways: lightning strikes, campfires not properly put out, a cigarette carelessly tossed away or, sometimes, straight-up arson. But the worst culprit of all is power lines. In 2018, fully half of California’s wildfires were started by power lines or related electrical problems. It’s not hard to figure out why: California’s power grid is ancient. Most of its towers were built before 1950. Some of the lines are so old they qualify for the National Registry of Historic Places. The lines that are failing and sparking fires? No surprise-the old ones.

Smart people are leaving California. The legislature thinks raising taxes will fix everything. Why do we pay the highest gas prices in the country? Why does this state have huge fires every single year? The legislature knows what the problem is but they refuse to fix it. Instead they are real good at finger pointing. Global warming is not even close to being a problem. Every country in the world has to believe Global Warming is a problem. China & India alone is responsible for building almost 3,000 new coal mining plants this year alone. The USA has not built a new coal mining plant in years. Instead of defunding the police they should focus on defunding welfare. Welfare is killing this country. California and New York have the largest number of welfare recipients in the U.S. They are both run by democratic governors. I want to move to a state with a Republican governor.

Certainly global climate emergency, is a large factor. That the power company has not invested, in keeping its network on top line, makes a good case to take it over, by the state. To sustain the population, the agricultural sector, with water, which is reliant on snow fall, has many citizens using boreholes, the finite ground water, is just that finite. As the climate continues to warm, the choices of Californian's, and other seaboard states, look to become passing difficult.

But people are so brainwashed you will never convince them otherwise. And how will the grid handle new electrical energy generation when it's ready to come on line? These people are incompetent but they think they know it all.

Correct on all points. I would like to add that stupid bureaucrats see megawatt capacity as a number on paper. In reality, the rolling blackouts were caused by the heat wave where the state's generating capacity was maxed out. Bureaucrats forgot that wind power is unpredictable and solar power goes to zero during the evening peak. Those megawatts on paper were not available when needed in real life. The rolling blackouts for a few hours in certain areas was necessary to avoid brownouts. If you operate electrical equipment in an undervoltage and under frequency, you risk burning up motors and electronics. So the complainers who were in the dark for a few hours had no clue that they could have had their expensive central air conditioner condensing unit destroyed.... $5000 and 3-4 weeks out for getting replacement unit installed? I put up with 2 hours of blackout and thank the grid operators for saving my fridge, AC unit, big screen TV, surround sound, printer, etc. Wind and solar power often come on at the wrong time and its very difficult to store electricity on a large scale. The cure for storing excess solar and wind power are reservoirs in the mountains with ''pumped storage capacity''. Excess power generated by base loaded steam turbine generators and unpredictable night time wind farm power allow water to be pumped back up into the reservoir. The pumping equipment can be reversed when the day's electric demand peaks. These pumps turn into hydroelectric generators when run backwards. So you can store electric energy for days and weeks with pumped storage facilities. The Helms project is one of these facilities. Why aren't there more pumped storage facilities? Environmentalists and bureaucrats would not issue permits to build them or add hydroelectric capable reservoirs that run off the yearly snow melt and store water. These take 4-6 years to build and complete. Expect more rolling blackouts during heat waves. Oh, I might add that the last remaining nuclear power plant in California, Diablo Canyon, is nearing the end of its design life and will be shut down permanently in 2024 and 2025. This takes another reliable 2200 Megawatts away from the grid. Thanks Californa environmentalists and bureaucrats. You saved the planet.

Probably not the worst idea to burn down california hmmm 'Kill it with fire'
A piece submitted by a resident of CA regarding the forests of the US west coast: Take a minute and read this. The timber industry I worked in for years had always said the woods were gonna burn if the two sides for and against couldn't come together for the betterment of our environment:( Welcome to the (Unnecessary) Mega Fire Generation! By Del Albright, Fire Chief (retired) 25-30 years ago, a 10,000 - 15,000-acre fire was a huge conflagration. Now we are experiencing 100,000 - 400,000-acre fires regularly. I would like to offer an explanation based on over 30 years of government service including 26 years with the fire service, as well as beginning my fire career with a Master’s Degree based on Prescribed Burning. NO! It is not just global warming (climate change). NO! It is not understaffed or ill-trained firefighters. NO! It is not Mamma Nature getting even with our urban sprawl. NO! It is not careless campers or hunters. NO! It is not kids with matches. (NO! It is not just arson committed by antifa and BLM arsonists)* YES! It is a combination of many things but more importantly, it is the LACK of forest/brushland/grassland management caused by wacko, radical enviro groups imposing excessive regulations, and restrictions on our ability to keep the west safe from wildfire. Here are the key takeaways from this article: · The lack of controlled burning/prescribed fire is directly responsible for the huge build-ups of flammable fuels. · The end of maintaining fire breaks (roads) in forested areas leaves firefighters with inadequate access. · The end of logging and good timber management as we used to know it is directly responsible for forests that are now tinderboxes. Let us take a deeper look at these reasons. CONTROLLED BURNS: Going back to Native Americans in America, controlled burning (later called Prescribed Fire) have saved the west from huge conflagrations. By burning large brush fields and using fire to thin brush in the forest, we kept the big boomers at bay. We had programs designed to reduce “chaparral” in the west, thus limiting the ability for fires to get ragingly out of control. In the early days of settling the west, ranchers regularly burned brush fields to make way for grazing and wildlife habitat. This entire program of controlled or prescribed fire is a near thing of the past. ROADS/FIRE BREAKS: When I started with the fire service in the 1970’s we had regularly scheduled building, repairing, cleaning, and maintaining fire breaks around rural housing areas and developments. We kept fire roads cleared and usable for large fire equipment. We had access to remote areas which allowed us to attack fires when they were small. Roads provided a place to start a safe backfire. Oh, backfires! Another art nearly lost today due to liability and excessive oversight by the media and radical enviro groups who have political power. LOGGING/TIMBER MANAGEMENT: If you live in the Pacific Northwest, you probably remember sawmills. They are all gone for the most part because the radical environmental rules have made logging a financial nightmare. You wonder why wood is so expensive these days? We cannot log; that’s why. Yes, there are still a few holdouts logging here and there. But the feds are hampered by so many regulations and restrictions that our timber stands either get bug infested or succumb to wildfires. We used to thin forest stands regularly - fire crews, inmate crews, machines that munch up underbrush, and yes, even pesticides to keep the forests healthy. Now, you can pick about any state in the west with timber and you see more bug-killed trees than live ones! In our western grasslands, the lack of proactive landscape management in desert states has resulted in vast acreages dominated by a fire cycle that is ruining wildlife habitat and causing bigger and more damaging conflagrations. This invasive species needs to be managed or these western deserts will never be the same - nor will our wildlife species. In timber areas, for the most part, we no longer control pests and bugs; we no longer do any substantial thinning of the underbrush; logging is kaput, and forest management is a façade. It is not the fault of our public land managers; it is the imposition of radical regulation. It is politics. SUMMARY: Public land management is no longer based on science but rather politics. The same goes for wildlife management. Radical enviro groups lobby politicians (and raise untold dollars in support) to STOP all the things that will make our forests, brushlands, and deserts safe and healthy. It is ironic (and pathetic) because for all their efforts to “save the world” they are destroying our world, piece by piece. To see fires in California reach half a million acres is beyond belief! What can we do? We must STOP the silliness and over-regulation and allow sound public land management, never forgetting that public lands are FOR the public. Help good politicians get elected and stay in office. Recall bad politicians. Do everything in your power to negate, refute, or STOP the radical movement that has stagnated management of our resources. * added by me to reflect existential reality. SOME were started by antifa and BLM anarchal arsonists.

Last night (8-17) I lest around 9pm to get something from the store...and I couldn't believe the insane orange glow coming from the mountains near Palm Springs (by the famous Tram). I remember earlier in the day seeing a small puff of smoke coming from the West which was the direction of the wind. I thought nothing of it because it looked like it was small enough to be quickly extinguished. I was wrong! The fires near Frisco and several others around the state...including one 2 weeks ago in the area that had folks evacuating their homes! Now this one...probably 10-20 miles from the one they just got under control! I have some suspicions that some of these fires are intentionally set by some of the same nimrods that have been rioting in the streets and burning down businesses. It rained pretty good several months ago and all the hills and mountains were lovely and green...but, its been in the 115 and 125 degrees range so far this summer and everything is dead and brown...and with the high winds we get...forgetaboutit!

I'm sorry but it's kinda funny hearing that pg&e failed to prioritize power lines solely because of the green energy movement in california. It's depressing that california is actually making progress in the area of green energy and because of the nature of one company's massive error, their progressive policies are blamed as the sole culprit. The fact of the matter is that fossil fuels are an issue. We had the science to demonstrate it back then that it was gonna become a problem in the future. That is the simple fact, and now we have people who want to stifle what may well be the alternative to possible death (solar, wind, geothermal, etc energy) for really no reason than the political and economical benefit of oil and most of the reasons they justify this with are based on what was once widely considered just conspiracy theory: that global warming doesn't exist. I can't wait to see PragerU's video about why Florida is the best state in the United States. That'll be a blast...
